Watch as the massive gantry crane, an essential piece of equipment that helped build the elevated guideway, is disassembled and removed from site.

In just a few seconds, you’ll see weeks of careful planning and precision work condensed into a smooth, coordinated operation.
This removal marks the completion of a critical phase in the project and highlights the teamwork and engineering expertise driving Edmonton’s transit expansion forward. The video offers a fascinating glimpse into how large-scale infrastructure comes together, and how it evolves as we move closer to delivering the Valley Line West LRT.

Gantry Crane Facts:

  • The gantry crane weighs 400 tonnes
  • 46 Y-piers hold up the guideway, connected by six to 15 segments of concrete between them
  • The pre-cast concrete segments were constructed in Blackfalds, Alberta
  • Construction of the elevated guideway began in fall 2021
  • Before being used on the Valley Line West, the gantry crane was used to build some of the infrastructure for Expo 2020 in Dubai. From there, it was shipped to Vancouver and travelled by train to Edmonton
